One thing fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe really wanted was for the X-Men to finally be introduced to their adventures. First, Wanda and Peter Maximoff appear in Avengers: Age of Utron (2014), and are children of Magneto in theory. Then comes the Asian island of Madripoor, which is frequented by mutants, in Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021). And finally, Professor X comes out in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
Naturally, none of the above means that there are characters of this specific species on Earth-616, the main setting of the franchise so far, nor that, therefore, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch belong to the same species or that Wolverine is used to be seen by the Princess Bar of the aforementioned archipelago. But the fact that Charles Xavier participates in Sam Raimi’s film gives us the assurance that, with the multiverse unleashed, we have the x-men.
And not just the inhabitants of the X-Mansion and company, of course. Also to the fantastic four by Reed Richards and the Inhumans by Blackagar Boltagan, who make up the Illuminati on Earth-838 along with Peggy Carter, Maria Rambeau, Karl Mordo and the aforementioned Professor X… until Wanda Maximoff arrives corrupted by the Darkhold and kills them one after another —except the baron— in the most brutal sequence of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Professor X has been killed… again
But the only one of the five the one we have seen die in other features is Charles Xavierso the audacity of screenwriter Michael Waldron, allowed by Sam Raimi himself and executive producer Kevin Feige, to kill him again it’s a bit tiresome. However, had he not shared the lethal fate of her companions, the prospect of a ruthless Scarlet Witch might dim. And, if Chiwetel Ejiofor’s sorcerer survives, it’s because he doesn’t confront her.
In X Men: The final decision (2006), the powerful Jean Gray loses control of her psychic abilities and transforms into the fearsome Dark Phoenix, who reduces Professor X to atoms before the eyes of Magneto and Wolverine in a tremendous sequence. But not without him having managed to transfer his consciousness to a comatose patient of Dr. Moira MacTaggert, as they explain to us during the post credits scenein which the poor guy suddenly speaks in his recognizable voice.
What no justification adequate is his return with the body restored in a similar scene of Wolverine immortal (2013), which prepares us for the apocalyptic events of 2023 in X Men: days of future past (2014), in which the ultra-technological sentinels of the program created by Dr. Bolívar Trask are about to send him to the other neighborhood with a jet of fire. Like Magneto, a Wolverine with a mind in 1973 and Kitty Pryde.
A tragedy that is losing strength
Since Raven Darkhölme then fails to shoot Peter Dinklage’s scientist, provoking a hostile reaction from the humans and full support for the program, the latter fails and the near death experience never occurs. But it is a fleeting joy. According to what they tell us in Logan (2017), Alzheimer’s disease ravages Charles Xavier’s brain, inadvertently killing almost all of the X-Men. And only Wolverine remains.
A girl named Laura with her powers escapes from the facilities of the Alkali-Transigen biotech corporation and ends up under the protection of “her father”. And, in her desperate flight, the X-24 clone of the protagonist himself mortally wounds with his retractable adamantium claws to Professor X at Will Munson’s farm. And he passes away shortly after, perhaps thinking that he has stabbed his old friend. But, as in Doctor Strange in the Universe of Madness, does not resurrect.

Let us remember, in any case, what it means for this matter that Marvel has proposed to integrate the previous films into its Cinematic Universe taking advantage, yes, of the multiversal situation and the intervention of its characters in the superhero saga with the same actors who played them: Patrick Stewart’s Professor X has already been murdered on three separate occasions. Y repeat something so terrible it loses strength every time. So please stop killing him.
