When colon bacteria break down fermentable fibers and undigested starches, the resulting gas exits through the back door. As for the stench, it comes specifically from three sulphurous gases: methanethiol, hydrogen sulfide and dimethyl sulfide, which have odors that scientists at the University of Minnesota, in the United States, compare with rotten eggs or broken vegetables.
What to do
Die without gas for a week. Mainly avoid legumes and eat more meat, fish, eggs and easy-to-digest carbohydrates. After a week, reintroduce the other foods one by one to identify the worst threats. Then you can improve your diet.
On food product labels, check sugar alcohols. These sugar substitutes have been chemically modified so that they are not completely absorbed by your small intestine. The three you should identify are sorbitol, mannitol and maltitol, which are usually found in protein shakes and sugar-free gum. In fact, less than 10 grams of sorbitol – how much in a packet of these gum? It is enough to increase your gas output as much as the probability of diarrhea.
Check with your doctor. If dietary changes do not solve the problem, ask your doctor to recommend medications with antispasmodic and antiflatulent effects.
