Stoffel Vandoorne will start on pole in the second mandate of the Berlin ePrix, last race of the 2020-21 Formula E season. Although on Saturday the Mercedes driver lost the last options to be champion, the Belgian wanted to close the ‘Season Seven’ in the best way and achieved a brilliant pole after signing a time of 1: 06.794. Oliver Rowland finished one tenth behind, while Mitch Evans was third. The Jaguar driver has been the only one of the title contenders present in the superpole, as Alex Sim, Tom Blomqvist and Norman Nato are out of this battle.
Q1 began with the big names of Formula E in action. A maximum pressure scenario in which Mitch Evans set the best time (1: 07.083). A remarkable record for being the first group and that had an enormous value, since Jake Dennis, Edo Mortara, Nyck de Vries, Lucas Di Grassi and Robin Frijns gradually fell on the grid as the pilots of the rest of the groups signed their turns. It did not happen in Q2, since Alex Lynn as the fastest driver did not go beyond the fifth position. António Félix Da Costa was sixth, although this position did not last long for the current champion of the electrical category.
The ‘banished’ offensive was born in Q3 with Stoffel Vandoorne’s best time. The Belgian surpassed Oliver Rowland by 33 thousandths, while Alex Sims managed to sneak third. André Lotterer also achieved a place in the top six, although the German ultimately failed to make it to the superpole. Norman Nato and Tom Blomqvist’s effort in Q4 they left the Porsche driver out of the final session, while Mitch Evans was the only Q1 driver to achieve a spot in the superpole, which outlines a very favorable career situation for the New Zealander.
Mitch Evans could not round out his performance in the superpole after finishing third, although his position may well be worth the title. The New Zealander will start in the second row, behind the poleman Stoffel Vandoorne and Oliver Rowland, two drivers who are not on the roster of 14 championship contenders. Behind you will have Alexander Sims, Tom Blomqvist and Norman Nato, also with nothing at stake beyond the result they can obtain individually. Out of the superpole, André Lotterer will start seventh ahead of Sébastien Buemi and Jake Dennis, second of the drivers with aspirations for the title on the grid.
Among the rest of the drivers who occupy the first positions of the general of Formula E, the key word is comeback. The leader Nyck de Vries will start 13th, while Edo Mortara will do it two places above, with a difference of three points between the two. For his part, Robin Frijns comes out at the end of the squad, while António Félix Da Costa and Lucas Di Grassi do it in 15th and 17th place respectively. A situation that leaves Mitch Evans and Jake Dennis as the highest-placed title contenders, as Evans comes out third and is five points behind the leaderWhile Dennis starts ninth and is four points behind the Dutch De Vries.
