Being able to change the refresh rate is a great tool to find the balance between quality and consumption.
Unsurprisingly, while Valve continues to work on meeting all the demand for the Steam Deck, it is also busy providing support and new features through system updates. With the arrival of Steam Deck version 3.2the company incorporates interesting adjustments and novelties, such as adjustments in the screen refresh rate or the Remote Play Together.
As we can read in the steam blogthanks to this version 3.2 of Steam OS that mounts Steam Deck, players have the option of “adjust screen refresh rate in the game on the go. The default setting is 60Hz (with possible limits of 60, 30, and 15 FPS), but this can now be reduced to 40Hz (with limits of 40, 20, and 10 FPS) or any integer in between.” It is a function designed to find the perfect balance between battery consumption, FPS and game quality, explains the company “40 Hz is usually the sweet spot to achieve ideal response, uniformity and fluidity,” it adds.
This Steam Deck system update also tweaks console fan behavior to be “smarter, more sensitive to what’s happening outside and inside the Steam Deck, and quieterespecially when usage is low” thanks to “a completely new curve, controlled by the operating system.” Similarly, you can revert to stock behavior from the System Settings menu.
Another novelty that comes along with this new version of the Steam Deck system is the Remote Play Together, although it is more of a new feature of the Steam client and not new to the OS, explains Valve. “Allows you to play with friends remotely as if they were sitting next to you, it already fully works on Steam Deck. This includes both hosting Remote Play Together sessions and joining other players’ sessions.”
Finally, version 3.2 of the Steam Deck system includes “more internal screen resolution options, faster microSD card formats, and audio enhancements such as maximum speaker volumewhich can now be raised even higher!”
All Steam in portable format
This 3.2 update of the Steam Deck system is especially interesting because of the possibility of adjusting the update frequency manually, which allows play longer without recharging the battery by achieving a better balance between consumption and quality of the game. For example, the free game that Steam gives away this week, although it will ultimately depend on each of the games compatible with Steam Deck and its performance on the console. “Hence, with a stable 40 FPS in-game and a 40Hz screen refresh rate, each frame is a new frameand the result is smoother than with a shaky frame rate and higher screen refresh,” the company explains on its blog.
