Jade has arrived in Blue Valley, the daughter of Green Lantern, who will join Stargirl and the Justice Society of America. Learn more about this young heroine
The Stargirl season two premiere introduced us to Jenni-Lynn Hayden, perhaps better known as Jade, the daughter of the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott.

If you are unfamiliar with the new heroine played by Ysa Penarejo, don’t feel bad; after all, Courtney clearly doesn’t know who she is, either.
Jade has been a member of some of DC’s biggest super teams and has a great history within the DC Universe. But to keep things simple, here are the top five things to know about Jade before seeing her in action again.
1.- Legacy Esmeralda from the cradle
We mentioned this above, but just to dig a little deeper, Jade has unusual parents in the comics. His mother is Rose Canton, a plant-based villain named Thorn, and his father is Alan Scott, the Green Lantern of the Golden Age.
Rose feared that her divided Thorn personality would harm her children, so she secretly put Jenni and her twin brother up for adoption. That’s right, Jade has a twin brother! And if you find that surprising… well, so did Jade! He didn’t find out about his brother Todd until he grew up.
Like Jenni, Todd is a superhero, but very different from her. Todd arms the shadows and fights evil under the name Obsidian. Meanwhile, Jade wields the light as a weapon. That’s right, one brother uses light and the other uses darkness.
2.- His skin is green
This seems to be a difference between the Jade that we will see in Stargirl and her comic book counterpart. Jenni grew up with an unusual green birthmark on her hand, which worsened as she grew older until her entire body turned green.
This raised some interesting questions, since Jenni didn’t even know she had been adopted. It turns out that Rose’s chlorophyll biology combined with Alan Scott’s exposure to the Starheart resulted in Jade’s unique complexion.
Still, while it may not be easy to go green, there are some benefits to Jade. He can harness the power of the Starheart, which means he has most of the powers of a Green Lantern even if he doesn’t have a ring.
3.- He can dominate Solomon Grundy
Solomon Grundy has been described as an untamed beast, but Jade might be the only person on Earth who has been able to calm the savage villain.
For years, Grundy was not a loyal beast to anyone, but everything changed in Infinity, Inc. # 36 when Jade rescued Grundy from a glacier. Grundy grew fond of Jade and fought alongside Infinity Inc., despite some team members feeling uncomfortable with the arrangement.
Unfortunately, they were right to be uncomfortable. A group of villains took advantage of Grundy’s devotion to Jade and tricked him into murdering Skyman in Infinity, Inc. # 51. It will be interesting to see if this relationship unfolds this season on Stargirl. Don’t forget, Grundy from the show is still roaming the sewers of Blue Valley.
4.- She was a member of the Green Lantern Corporation
When your superhero name is Jade, your skin is green, and your father is Alan Scott, it is inevitable that you will end up working with the Green Lantern Corps. In fact, Jade is partially responsible for the resurgence of the Corps.
In 1998 Green Lantern # 107, Kyle Rayner found himself in possession of a Green Lantern ring that could create a duplicate of himself and planned to travel the galaxy using it to rebuild the Corps roster. Kyle didn’t want to leave Earth without a Lantern during his odyssey, and Jade happily volunteered.
By this time, Jade had lost her powers, so Green Lantern’s new ring helped her regain some of her superhero mojo. She bravely defended Earth while Kyle was gone, allowing her to rebuild the Green Lantern Corps and restore the galactic army to its former glory.
5.- He led a mutiny against Nightwing
Jade has been a member of the Justice League, the Justice Society, Infinity, Inc., and the Outsiders. His time with the latter group, in particular, was notable in that Jade served as their leader after what can only be called a hit.
Arsenal and Nightwing were co-managing the team and it wasn’t going well. (There were a lot of testosterone-fueled infighting.) So in 2004’s Outsiders # 16, Jade decided to put the boys in their place and take over as team leader.
It takes guts to look Roy Harper and Dick Grayson in the eye and tell them you’re in charge, but… well, it also takes guts to break into the home of Blue Valley’s irascible protector. That’s what Jade is!
The second season of Stargirl will premiere on the CW network on August 10 in the United States, while in Latin America the first season is already available through the digital platform HBO Max.
