We return with the theories of the fans about the Star Wars saga. This time, it is the darkest. He claims that R2-D2 was so pissed off at Obi-Wan as to sabotage his escape from the Death Star and let Anakin get revenge.
The franchise of Star wars it is riddled with fan theories, and others are constantly being added to the list. While some of them could be proven by evidence, such as that Boba Fett killed Owen and Beru Lars, others were always out of hope. One of them claims that Obi-Wan Kenobi confessed to being a clone in A new hope (1977). However, there is a new theory that could be the darkest yet, involving none other than the droid R2-D2.
The theory, proposed on Reddit by u / Zaius_MD , states that R2-D2 planned Obi-Wan’s death in A new hope as revenge. The Jedi mutilated Anakin and left him for dead on Mustafar. Generally speaking, it seems pretty far-fetched, but there is some speculative evidence that reveres the favorite droid over a dark light.
The theory begins in the moments after Order 66 is executed. After the Jedi Temple is sacked, Anakin sets out to eliminate the Separatist Council on Mustafar. When he arrives, he tells R2-D2 to stay on the ship, subsequently he continues to finish his mission. In that situation, the droid notices something strange about his partner.
Shortly after the newly christened Sith Lord eliminates the Separatists, Obi-Wan arrives and duels Anakin over the burning lakes. To end the conflict, Obi-Wan uses the high ground to his advantage and mutilates his former padawan, leaving him for dead. Afterwards, he returns to the ship and convinces R2 to leave the planet without his master, arguing that he is dead.
Years later, the droid is sent to Tatooine by the princess. Leia to request Obi-Wan’s help, but after arriving and being welcomed by Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Master acts as if he had never met R2. It is at this point that he may have realized that Darth Vader is actually Anakin, as Obi-Wan begins to tell Luke about his apprentice. He has only had one. With that information, R2 saw how he covered up his actions by lying to the young Jedi apprentice about what really happened to his father.
Continuing with the argument, R2 decides to seek justice and, when the opportunity arises in the Star of death, begins to implement your plan. Fueled by anger at Anakin and regret for abandoning his former master, he sabotages Obi-Wan’s escape by alerting Vader to his whereabouts. But after seeing the radical change of his old teacher, R2 understands that it is impossible to save him. So, as a “self-punishment”, he dedicates himself to protecting and serving Anakin’s children in their fight against the Empire.
However, although this theory might work from a hypothetical point of view, it does not hold up. The droids in Star Wars are smart, but most don’t stand out for their loyalty. At the time of sale, they are loyal to their owner / buyer. Despite this, it is worth noting the connection and bond that R2-D2 has with Anakin, but he knew that as soon as he was left behind in Mustafar, he was no longer who he used to be. Something strange was happening, and Obi-Wan’s appearance, along with their subsequent fight, only confirmed it. Additionally, the droid is one of Star Wars’ greatest heroes, helping three generations fight for the light side. So even though R2 was cunning enough to plot Obi-Wan’s death, there is no credible way he did it.
What do you think about this theory? Do you think R2-D2 would be able to come up with such a malevolent plan? Leave your opinion in comments.
