With regard to the World Day for the Fight against Tuberculosis, a very special recognition was delivered. It’s about a award for what is considered the best pulmonologist in Mexico. His work has not only focused on patient care but also on research and scientific dissemination. Do you know who he is?
In this case we refer to the Dr. Miguel Angel Salazar Lezamawho works as head of the Occupational and Preventive Health Coordination of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER) “Ismael Cosío Villegas”. During his message, he said that in Mexico 40 percent of people with drug-resistant tuberculosis also have diabetes. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively treat comorbidities, since they increase the risk of mortality.
The specialist also reported that There are 346 million people with diabetes globally. In fact, in Mexico in 2018, 8.6 million people were registered with this chronic condition and it was more frequent in women.
The specialist recommended that each and every tuberculosis patients undergo a study to measure blood glucosewith the purpose that, in case of suffering from diabetes, they start treatment for both diseases.
The best pulmonologist in Mexico
In the ceremony that took place in the INER auditorium, in the context of the third and last day of activities of the international workshop on this disease, Miguel Ángel Salazar Lezama received recognition from the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Cenaprece), for their contributions, solidarity, dedication, teaching and research in the fight against tuberculosis.
Pulmonologist Salazar Lezama has focused his work on the care of people with tuberculosis who develop resistance to different drugs. Clinical analysis and diagnosis of it have contributed to the study on non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Also, he participated in the first lung transplant in Mexico.
Academic and professional training
Miguel Ángel Salazar Lezama graduated in Medicine from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), specializing in Pulmonology at INER, and postgraduate studies in tuberculosis at the Vancouver General Hospital, Canada.
He has served as a national and international advisor on tuberculosis. He is an active member of the Drug Resistance Group and the Stop Tuberculosis Committee.
He is also a member of the Mexican Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery and the American College of Chest Physicians; head of the Latin American Union of Physiology and Respiratory Disease Societies (Ulaster); president of the National Council of Pneumology; Honorary Advisor on Tuberculosis for the Region of the Americas of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), and President of the International Union to Fight Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases.
