The important music streaming platform Spotify would be testing the option of galleries of non-fungible tokens (NFT) in the profiles of the musicians. Should the tests prove successful, the addition of NFT would serve to improve the experience for artists and fans.
On Friday, it was reported that Spotify is conducting a test for certain users of the platform’s Android app in the United States. These users can see the previews of the NFTs in the profiles of the artists. Currently, there are only two of these artists, DJ/producer Steve Aoki and indie rock band The Wombats, both known for their embrace of NFT.
There is no direct purchase option, but after reading about NFTs and getting the extended preview, the user can tap to be redirected to the OpenSea page where they could purchase the item. According to reports, Spotify doesn’t support videos or GIF formats, and it only displays a static image without any sound.
As the company’s spokesperson told reporters, the tests are being carried out “in an effort to improve the experiences of artists and fans”, and although some of them will end up “paving the way for an experience broader”, others “only serve as important learning”. Some Spotify users have spoken of the survey related to the NFTs they have received from the streaming service.
According to Music Ally, Spotify does not take any part of NFT sales during testing. Cointelegraph had not received a response from the company at press time.
Musicians are actively exploring the NFT market, which could be a vital source of income, especially in times when international touring is being disrupted by COVID-19. In 2021, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda became the first major label artist to release a single as NFT, and the Kings of Leon were the first band to release a full album in non-expendable form. The aforementioned Steve Aoki, according to Rolling Stone’s estimate, made close to $3 million by minting just two NFT pieces from the collection of 11.
