In a recent interview with IGN, Ian Flynn, who has also worked on some of the franchise’s comics, spoke about the narrative theme, which will be a bit different from the other games. Mainly, he pointed out that melancholy would be the perfect word to describe everything, a theme that is not usually touched on in the titles of the blue hedgehog.

Here are their statements:

“Melancholia” is a good word for the story in general. Sonic’s indomitable spirit carries him throughout the adventure and is what allows him to help each of his friends as they face their own personal challenges. Anyone else you meet will have their own identity shaped by their interactions with Sonic, which isn’t always a comfortable process. Then there are the secrets of the Starfall Islands and how the tragedies of the past have led to today’s adventure. Sonic’s “never say die” attitude is certainly put to the test.
