The international organization Slow Food has launched the Slow Wine Coalition, a global network that brings together all the protagonists of the wine industry to implement a wine revolution characterized by environmental sustainability, the defense of nature and social growth and culture of the fields.
The first major event of the Coalition will take place in Bologna (Italy), from February 26 to March 1, 2022 with the Slow Wine Fair, an international meeting between winemakers, workers and enthusiasts in which there will be talks, Laboratorios del Gusto and tastings, with the aim of establishing a path towards a new revolution in the wine world so that all the players in the industry understand that the role of wine cannot only be the hedonistic one linked to the pleasure of tasting, but must follow a path of authentic environmental sustainability, defense of nature and social and cultural growth of the wine regions.
For a good, clean and fair wine
The Slow Wine Coalition aims to bring together, under this idea, those who are part of the wine industry, from producers to importers and distributors, from winemakers to hoteliers, from sommeliers to journalists, communicators and all those passionate.
The initiative is based on three pillars: environmental sustainability, defense of nature and cultural and social growth of the fields. Unfortunately, factors such as pollution, the impoverishment of biodiversity due to the use of herbicides and fertilizers, monocultures in the higher-priced areas, or the exploitation of labor, are increasingly present in the world of wine, traces of an old agricultural culture which many producers are giving up in favor of a true revolution that is slowly reshaping this face of the sector.
In fact, there are many wineries that, seeking a general agricultural reform, have begun to experiment and have resorted to sustainable cultivation systems, practicing biological and biodynamic agriculture. In the future, especially with a view to tackling climate change, this sector will be forced to move faster to set a good example for other crops that are often more economically unfortunate.
And it is not only this: often, the most used vines are located in hills or mountains, in areas with a great slope, where the grape is the only opportunity to create value and maintain a human stronghold. For this reason, modern wine companies assume a central role in defending nature, protecting its beauty and integrity, and encouraging the development of a tourism system that takes care of ecology and gastronomy.
Finally, the wineries are a place of integration for many foreign workers who today represent a fundamental workforce in the fields and who, in turn, become new inhabitants of the hills and villages that make a living from viticulture. A relationship aimed at assessing skills and, if possible, adding new ones.
