The singer confessed that the criticism she received for her film, Music, led her to think about suicide
In February 2021, Sia released her film titled Music, which he described as “a love letter to caregivers and the autistic community.” The plot tells the story of Zu, a woman dealing with a troubled past and becoming the guardian of her half-sister, Music: a young girl with autism.
However, the film received rejection and multiple criticisms after being considered “offensive” content, as a large part of the audience pointed out that the film contributes to propagating “harmful stereotypes” about people who suffer from this condition.

On the other hand, the fact that the singer has chosen Maddie Ziegler to play the young woman with autism, instead of giving an actress who really has this disorder the opportunity, also generated controversy and displeasure among the public.
“She doesn’t seem to care about exploring who her main character really is, nor does she try to raise awareness of neurodiversity”, “It’s an irresponsible, scary and off-key movie” and “The problem with Music’s character is not that Sia chose an actress without autism to play a person with autism. The problem is that Sia didn’t get a solid performance from Ziegler, nor did she choose a better actress for the role,” were some of the criticisms she received.

The rejection that her project received greatly affected Sia, who even revealed that she had to enter rehabilitation after having been the victim of suicidal thoughts.
“I was suicidal and relapsed and went to rehab,” he told The New York Times.
The artist pointed out that it was Kathy Griffin, her friend and comedian, who helped her out of this severe depression and assured that she saved her life.
