Two people died and at least four who were injured were in good condition in a hospital after a man entered his vehicle at a distribution center and started shooting at people Saturday in California.
The two deceased and the four injured were rushed to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff, spokeswoman Allison Hendrickson told The Associated Press. She declined to provide further details.
The man opened fire with an ” AR-type weapon ” around 3:30 p.m. at the Walmart distribution center south of Red Bluff, emergency telecommunications officials told the Record-Searchlight newspaper.
There was also a fire at the scene and the suspect reportedly lashed out at the building with his vehicle, according to sources. There were about 200 workers at the facility, some of whom locked themselves in a room, local workers told KHSL TV.
The suspect was traveling in a white vehicle that entered the facility, according to the Sacramento Bee newspaper. The attacker was in the middle of the parking lot, said those in charge of emergency telecommunications.
The suspect was shot in the chest around 3:45 p.m., sources told the newspaper.
Scott Thammakhanty, an employee at the site’s reception center, said he heard gunfire from a semi-automatic weapon from the assailant.
“It went on and on, I don’t even know how many times he fired, ” said Thammakhanty. ” I just know it was a lot of times .”
Thammakhanty told the newspaper that he did not know the identity of the subject.
Emergency telecommunications officials told the Record-Searchlight newspaper that at least one woman was shot. A man said the assailant passed him over the leg with the vehicle when he attacked the store but says he is not sure if the attacker was shot dead, according to officials.
Walmart spokesman Scott Pope told Record-Searchlight that the company is ” aware of the situation ” and works with the police.
“We have no additional information to share at this time, ” said Pope.
Redd Bluff is a city of about 14,000 residents about 210 kilometers (131 miles) north of Sacramento, California.
