In one scene, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) turns to the camera and asks the audience: “You feel it too, right?” And surely all the viewers felt it. Finally the emotion of seeing the dream come true. One of the crossovers most expected. Whether fans of she-hulk or of Daredevilepisode 8 had something for everyone and was specially designed to please everyone.
After many waiting episodes, the devil from Hell’s Kitchen finally landed on the series created by Jessica Gao. For many, the task ahead was cause for concern. One where you would have to insert such a dark and solemn character in a Show of television that obeys the tones and the rules of the sitcom. Fortunately, the creators demonstrate a perfect mastery of their characters and the meeting probably translates into one of the best episodes so far.
In episode 8 of she-hulk Our favorite female lawyer must represent a frog-themed pseudo-superhero in court. The problem is that his super suit betrays him and burns him mid-mission. Outraged, he decides to sue the creator of said suit for negligence of a defective product. And that designer is none other than Luke Jacobson (Griffin Matthews).
This puts Jen in serious trouble. As Luke’s client, she’s not too happy to face him in court, but her boss forces him to take the case. She also worries that the dispute will crack her relationship and she may lose the only super designer capable of making her a gala dress. However, when she arrives she will also have to face Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), the favorite defense attorney of all fans.
Matt Murdock’s arrival is gracefully handled by Cody Ziglar’s script and Kat Coiro’s direction.. Although the character belongs to a different narrative tonality, the dynamic he has with Jennifer in court is quite funny and measured. The chemistry that exists between both characters is an absolute sign that Marvel Studios knows how to handle and use their characters in any way they please.
However, the dynamic between She Hulk and Daredevil in episode 8 is even better. Regardless of whether the series is comedy, it has previously shown itself to be incisive with its humor. And so it is with violence. Take advantage of the arrival of the devil from Hell’s Kitchen to increase the doses in the action scenes and create a wild team with both characters.
These moments are full of blows, but also very funny. In one sequence, the duo confronts a group of criminals and discusses the judicial rules with which they could convict a subject, while dishing out blows and performing stunts in front of the camera. Thus, the series makes it clear that its heroes are both on the street and in court.
Fans will be pleased with the many references made to the ill-fated Netflix series. From the rescued musical theme composed by Joe Paesano; to a body-to-body fight of the superhero against another group, in the space of a singular corridor. This time with blue lighting.
Both Tatiana Maslany and Charlie Cox do a good job with their roles. The chemistry between the two is evident, so much so that Jennifer Walters constantly breaks the fourth wall to let us know. In addition, the resolution of their meeting honors their comic book counterparts, leading them both to a scene of intimacy.
episode 8 of she-hulk also had another series of winks and references outside of Daredevil. Die-hard fans will have noticed the mention of the Red Hulk, or the way Nikki placed a series of cosmetics on his hands to remind us of Wolverine (heralding his return?).
Just the story does not end with the adventure with Matt Murdock. The protagonist breaks the fourth wall to wonder why the episode is longer than normal and has broken her own rules. She anticipates perhaps that something bad may happen or that a twist is ready to make an appearance.
Jennifer is not wrong. The end of the episode represents the last step in a narrative that has been under construction for several installments back. Our She Hulk receives a kind of attack that unleashes her fury and leaves acquaintances and strangers perplexed. The above is the last grain of sand that anticipates the confrontation that we will see in the season finale.
In this chapter, the level of confidence and complicity that exists between Walters and the viewer, after breaking the fourth wall for a long time, is high. So when the protagonist loses control and scares everyone, including herself, her first reaction is to turn to the camera and look to the viewer for help. Incredible detail that performs like the best of cliffhangers.
The final episode of She Hulk is coming to Disney Plus next week.
