Sadly, the video game industry is in mourning. During the weekend it was announced that Mick mcginty, an artist that you will recognize for his work on the covers of games such as Street fighter ii by SNES, passed away on September 18, 2021.
Although McGinty devoted himself to creating landscape paintings for the past several years, during the 90s he worked alongside companies like Capcom and SEGA to create western covers for games like Street Fighter II, Streets of Rage 2, Streets of Rage 3, Kid Chameleon, Shining Force, the Zoo Tycon series and many more titles. Regarding his passing, this was what commented his son:
“My dad was an incredible artist, as everyone knows. And in true artist fashion, he was never satisfied with his final work, either. Just a couple of weeks ago, he said he needed ‘just one more hour on some pieces’ to be able to do it. However, we all knew that was not true. Dad would always come to visit our house, he would see some of the paintings he did for us over the years, and he would put his nose an inch from them and say, ‘You know, Jobe, I wish I had made those blues a little deeper. ‘, or’ you know I’d love to just splash a little more shadows on that tree ‘or’ that really needs a new coat of varnish. ‘
McGinty was interviewed for the upcoming documentary by Street Fighter II Here Comes A New Challenger. In this way, we will have one more opportunity to hear the artist speak about his work.
Rest in peace, Mick McGinty
