The Association of Scouts of Mexico formed a monumental lily flowerthe largest in the world, in the Plinth of the Mexico City. For this he used more than a million aluminum cans.
The giant fleur de lis was created to support those affected by the earthquakes that took place in Syria and Turkey last month; as well as to generate environmental awareness.
The civil organization, which also celebrated 96 years of scouting in Mexico, organized a collection of aluminum cans in the Constitution Plaza of the CDMX.
More than one million 189 thousand cans were collected and with them the fleur de lis could be made, which measured almost 100 meters in length.
However, the story does not end there, as the Scotus will sell the collected cans. It is expected that the money raised from the sale of cans will be donated to support some social causes:
- To the development of programs that benefit girls, boys and adolescents through the care homes of the National System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (DIF).
- To people affected by earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.
According to the Association, it is estimated that about 350,000 pesos will be allocated to each of these causes.
What does the fleur de lis represent for Scouts?
The fleur de lis is the quintessential symbol of scouts. Worldwide, this emblem represents more than 55 million young people around the world. But do you know what it means? Here we tell you.
The origins of this insignia refer to Baden Powell, who was supposedly the one who organized the first scout camp on Brownsea Island. Therefore, he had the need to create an emblem that distinguished the scouts.
The symbol he took to create the scout emblem was the ancient marine compass: the fleur de lis, which always points to where north is.
Scout’s duty
According to the organizations, the fleur de lis marks the path that a scout must go through to fulfill his duty: always forward, always ready.
The image is composed of three petals, a central line, two stars, a ring, and a rope. These elements have their own meaning:
- The three petals represent three points of the scout promise: duty to God, country, help to others and commitment to the environment; as well as duty to oneself.
- The center line means the straight path that the scouts should follow in their life.
- The stars represent the 10 articles of the scout law, as well as their contact with nature.
- The ring signifies global union and brotherhood.
- The rope reminds of discipline and effort to be better people.
