In its December issue, the Consumer Magazine of the Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco) analyzed 47 types of sardines packaged with various coatings: Vegetable oils (olive, soybean and sunflower), tomato and chili sauces and marinade.

These brands will be recalled because they contain less than they claim:
- guaymex: 23 grams less, with 4.1% offal.

How to identify high quality canned sardines?
As Profeco explains, there are several characteristics to take into account when choosing a good product:
- Do not buy the can if it is scratched, bulged, or rusted.
- Check the label as some contain excess sodium.
- Domestic sardines are cheaper than imported canned ones, and those with tomato sauce are cheaper than those with olive oil.
- It must have the characteristic color of sardines cooked in their packing medium.
- Do not eat the sardines if you notice an unusual color or aroma when you open the can.
- Before eating, check if the texture is firm and there are no foreign objects.
- Without head, gills and internal organs.
- It has a firm texture, not leathery or pasty.
- The product is free of foreign matter.
