Sarah Michelle Gellar finally broke the silence regarding the much talked about toxic environment in association with Joss Whedon and the series Buffy. During the last years various stories were provided by former stars of the Show of the vampire hunter But the great protagonist of him had not said anything clear about it.
Now during TheWrap’s Power of Women summit organized in Los Angeles, the actress opened up (via) on the subject. While participating in the “Power of Storytelling: Producers Roundtable,” Michelle Gellar commented that she also tells her own stories of being a beautiful young actress in Hollywood. She especially referred to the time she spent during the recordings of buffy the vampire slayer where he described that there was a “very toxic male environment.”
“For so long, I was on a set that I think was known for being an extremely toxic male set,” Gellar said. «And that was ingrained in my head that this is how all the sets were. And that the women faced each other. That if women became friends, then we became too powerful, so it had to be kept hidden.”
Joss Whedon has been embroiled in controversy over the past few years when he has been accused of “hostile and toxic behavior” in his sets. Sarah Michelle Gellar also recognized that hostile and toxic environment created on the set of Buffy and confessed that she now understands that this type of atmosphere is not the rule.
“And now that I’ve had the opportunity to work with many more women and men who are also supporting women, I’ve realized how easy the experience can be,” she continued. “But… unfortunately we are still in that place where all those departments often have to be women for us to have a voice.”
In a post by the actress on Instagram, which was published in 2021, the actress said she was proud to have belonged to Buffy. However, she assured that she “does not want to be forever associated with the name of Joss Whedon.”
