Samsung mobiles begin to receive virtual RAM, an improvement in the use of storage that allows the RAM upgrade by software. This feature, known as RAM Plus, is spreading to mobiles around the world. And it does not depend on the range: Samsung brings its virtual memory to both accessible and more expensive mobiles.
Virtual or extended RAM is one way to adapt part of the physical storage to volatile memory. The speed and effectiveness of virtual memory will never be the same as physical memory, but it can help lower performance terminals. That is why it is surprising that Samsung is taking it to high-end mobiles premium, like the Samsung Galazy Z Fold 3.
RAM Plus even in mobiles with 12 GB
Mobile phones have certain components that make the difference between the different price and quality ranges. The number of cameras, the resolution of the screen, the technology of its panel … and the RAM memory, for example, one of those details that betray the type of audience the mobile is targeting. Because, if a phone has 12 GB of RAM, surely there is more than enough. Or maybe not.
The first time we read about RAM Plus, Samsung’s virtual memory, we learned that the company had started rolling it out to a mid-range from India: the Samsung Galaxy A52s. Currently, we have the European version of that mobile and we can confirm that virtual memory is available. Specifically, our mobile updated with this functionality on September 8, 2021.
RAM Plus has also begun to reach mobiles such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3, as detailed by SamMobile. This phone, with 12 GB of physical RAM, does not need at all to extend the volatile memory by segmenting the storage. Even so, Samsung has decided to include functionality, a move that shows the brand’s strategy: RAM Plus will surely be introduced in One UI so that it ends up reaching all smartphones, not only to the mid and low range.
To check if your Samsung mobile already has virtual memory you must do the following:
- Access the phone settings and go to “Maintenance and battery“.
- Enter “Memory”.
- Below the amount used you will see the message “RAM Plus (virtual memory)“in case you already have it.
- By default Samsung reserves 4 GB of storage as virtual volatile memory. It will only be used in cases where physical memory becomes full.
The virtual RAM cannot be modified: Samsung reserves 4 GB by default and those are the ones that will be used. Not only that: RAM Plus cannot be disabled. Once the phone has been updated with this function, One UI will carry out the reservation process automatically.
