The used car sales in Spain have suffered a further significant decline. In the month of March 2022 have been reached 170,595 units transfers. A volume of copies marketed that, if compared with that obtained in the same period of the previous year, represents a notable decrease of 7.1%. The second-hand car is thus in line with the Spanish car market as a whole. The fall is the general tonic.
This new drop, added to that of February, is a heavy burden for the accumulated data. In the period between the months of January and March 2022 sales of second-hand passenger cars and SUVs have accumulated 449,086 units, 1.8% less than in 2021. And what is more worrying, the used vehicle market has returned to 2020 levels, the worst moment of the pandemic since confinement made a big dent in commercial activity.
Despite the poor result in March, the second-hand car is clearly ratified as the first purchase option among Spanish drivers. And it is that 2.8 used cars have been sold for each new car. A ratio that stands at 2.7 VO/VN in the whole of the first quarter.
Pre-owned cars experience the biggest drop
In an analysis of sales by age brackets, the biggest drop has been in pre-owned cars between 1 and 3 years old, whose transfers plummeted 42.9% until March with a total of 26,614 units. In March alone, operations with these vehicles fell by 39.6% to stand at 10,502 units.

In the month of March, operations with so-called “mileurist cars” grew by 6.6% with 64,583 units. They accounted for nearly 38% of the market.
In a context of general decline, the greatest growth was recorded in sales of used models between 5 and 8 years old, which accumulated a rise of 17% in the first quarter with 43,145 transfer units. During the past month, these models, largely from foreign markets, have increased their sales by almost 10% with 16,794 units respectively. Imports accumulate growth of 52.7% between January and March.
Second-hand electric cars weather the storm
