The Russian presidency celebrated “the transparency and probity” of the legislative elections, won by the ruling party, United Russia, in a context of accusations of massive fraud by the opposition, mostly excluded from the consultation.
“For the president [Vladimir Putin] The most important thing is, of course, that the elections have been contested in transparency and probity, “said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, who described the victory as” positive “with about 50% of the votes of the formation in power. .
Peskov acknowledged that the Communist Party – which several Russians voted to express their dissatisfaction with power – improved its results in the election, reflecting the competitive nature of the country’s electoral system.
“At the same time, we have seen that United Russia is the majority preference of the voters,” he added.
With 95% of the vote count, United Russia was the most voted party with 49.6% of the votes, followed by the Communist Party with 19.2%.
The ruling party had obtained 54.2% of the votes in the 2016 elections, while the Communist Party obtained 13.3%.
The opposition, largely excluded from these elections, like the main opponent, the jailed Alexei Navalni, denounced massive fraud, especially in electronic voting, as the United Russia victory expanded overnight.
