One of the biggest inventions of the past year was the Covid-19 vaccine. Thanks to the union of efforts and millionaire investments, its development was achieved in record time. To date, there are almost 20 options manufactured by different pharmaceutical companies, although they all have the same objective. What they offer is a decrease in the probability of developing severe phases of this new disease that can lead to death.
A disease that is here to stay?
Now, from the beginning it has been said that there are no perfect immunizations or miracle options. In addition, its function is not to prevent infections because it is quite likely that they will continue as with influenza or HIV.
While another aspect to consider is the constant mutation that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has shown. Especially the Delta Variant is the one that causes the most concern because it has made it more infectious and dangerous. While another of its consequences is that it also reduces the effectiveness of some current vaccines against Covid-19.
Despite the above, it cannot be overlooked that immunization, regardless of the manufacturer, does offer real benefits of great importance. Although when accompanied by other measures such as the use of face mask, constant hand washing and social distancing protection is even greater.
In this regard, the Wisconsin Department of Health in the United States published the result of an analysis on the subject. What it did was compare recent hospitalizations and deaths that have occurred and identify whether the affected people already had the full vaccination scheme or not.
Differences between each group
As part of the work, it was obtained that for every 100,000 people who already have the two doses of any immunization, only 125.4 infections, 4.9 hospitalizations and 0.1 deaths occur. With this it can be seen that the risk of dying from this new disease is practically nil.
Whereas when it comes to people lacking the Covid-19 vaccine, the figures are quite different. For every 100,000 inhabitants there are 369.2 infections, 18.2 hospitalizations and 1.1 deaths. In all areas the risk is greater and this emphasizes the importance of receiving immunization as soon as possible to avoid consequences that can be catastrophic.
