After many delays, Wonder Woman 1984 has already been released, the sequel to the 2017 smash hit that elevated director Patty Jenkins (Monster, I Am the Night) and made Gal Gadot a superstar. Now we can see the long-awaited movie that this time takes the action to the 80s in the middle of the Cold War, instead of the First World War.
Before starting with the criticism of Wonder Woman 1984, we must remember that it is necessary to keep the first installment fresh in memory. Since there are many references, especially to the relationship between Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).
Synopsis of the film:
The story of Wonder Woman 1984 is very simple, attention SPOILERS. Diana Prince has been fighting evil in secret all these years. She works at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC and there she meets Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), a slightly clumsy woman who no one pays any attention. After Wonder Woman manages to prevent a jewelry robbery, some very old art pieces are recovered. Among them is a stone that seems worthless, but actually grants people’s deepest desire.
Diana Prince wants to be with Steve Trevor again. While Barbara Minerva wants to look like her, not knowing that she is a superhero and that that gives her powers, such as speed and super strength. While Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), a businessman who has created a pyramidal scam, covets this powerful object and becomes the stone itself granting wishes to all people. But when the whole world can make its wishes come true, civilization as we know it falls. It has already happened several times in the past and only Wonder Woman can prevent disaster.
Movie review:
Wonder Woman 1984 has such a straightforward story that it was hard to beat the original movie. He has also lacked a great villain since Max Lord is a kind of Lex Luthor but with a good heart and obviously, Cheetah is not up to the task. So much so that to do some damage, it has only occurred to them that Diana Prince was losing her powers in the purest Superman 2 style (1980).
Even so, it has very good moments like the great start on the Island of Themyscira, some of the action scenes, the return of Steve Trevor and seeing how it adapts to the 80s.
