Broly’s return has been announced in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, an event that took a large part of the fandom by surprise. This article will contain spoilers, if you don’t want to spoil your experience.we recommend you read the last chapters of this work, which are available in the online service of MangaPlus by ShueishaWell, there will be some details that we will mention to explain why the next Broly story could not take place on Earth.
As Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero begins, we find Goku and Vegeta on Beerus’ homeworld continuing training that will lead to the Granola arc. But, we noticed something interesting: Broly is there too, and he continues to practice with Goku to control his wild rage.. At one point in the match, Broly loses his cool and begins to have the same eruption of power that he had in the final act of his movie. The team manages to knock Broly down before he unleashes his full power, but an even more important detail is shown in this scene.
Clearly, Dragon Ball Super still plans to make use of Broly in its saga, but it also makes it very clear that the character cannot be trusted (at this time) to be hanging around planet Earth. When Broly fought on Earth in the final act of his own movie, the real immediate danger was that his Berserker form almost caused the planet to fracture. Beerus’ planet is a necessary training ground for Broly, as it is one of the few places that he can withstand his level of power and energy.
Many Dragon Ball fans are now openly wondering what Broly’s future will be in the franchise. Dragon Ball Super is hard at work revising and/or reconfiguring its own mythos in a much more streamlined form. Reintroducing Broly into the official canon was a first step, giving him a background and making him a recurring character seems to have been the right decision. However, it remains to be seen how they will be able to develop their character arc without repeating the same mistakes as before.
Broly’s future in Dragon Ball Super
In addition to the reintroduction of Broly, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero brought Gohan back to the fore and Piccolo was another big one; while the manga has expanded on the history of Goku’s father, Bardock, the origin of the Namekians and their Dragon Balls, as well as the full nature of Saiyan power. Now the manga has set the stage for a new big Dragon Ball Super story arc event, as Black Frieza has made his debut.
For all of the above, it should not surprise us that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero did not hide that he would bring Broly back for an appearance. It seems that the franchise wants to take advantage of the nostalgia of its fans And now that the movie is in theaters around the world, we know exactly how Broly fits into the main story. That’s all to say – this movie is just the first real hint of what Dragon Ball can do with Broly as a supporting character or even a cameo, but there are plenty more opportunities for him in the future.
Animation supervisor Naohiro Shintani spoke about the process of redesigning such a popular character and Akira Toriyama’s requests: “Toriyama had said that he didn’t want him to be too macho.so I aimed to make it look as big as possible, but still within the bounds of not going overboard**.”
It is understandable that Toriyama wants to tone down Broly’s size and attitude now that he would be integrated into the official canon of the saga. In the older non-continuity “Dragon Ball Z” movies of the past, Broly was basically the Saiyan version of the Incredible Hulk., with green hair and all, for better or worse. While Broly would keep some of his massive size and still be bigger than most characters in “Dragon Ball Super”, there was more restraint in his character design this time around.
