World Recycling Day was proclaimed by Unesco.
In the last 20 years, the recycling of containers and packaging in Mexico grew by 200 percent, generating more than 70,000 direct and indirect jobs.
ECOCE is an ecology company created to contribute to the preservation and improvement of the environment through the promotion of a recycling culture.
This May 17th is celebrated the World Recycling Day which aims to raise awareness about the importance of the correct disposal of waste to help the environment, minimizing the volume of waste generated to reduce the carbon footprint. This can be achieved thanks to the three R’s: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.
According to the UNthe “circular economy” scheme is intended to stimulate economic growth, in addition to generating jobs without compromising the environment, maintaining the value of materials for as long as possible, but to achieve this, ecology companies strive to comply with certain tasks, in this case Ecology and Business Commitment (ECOCE), a non-profit association created and sponsored by the food and beverage industry to help preserve and improve the half atmosphere through the promotion of the culture of recycling, recovering the waste of containers and packaging of the products of the associated companies, for its maximum use in the country.
ECOCE and its associates are in charge each year of promoting the fulfillment of the sustainable development objectives of the UN facing 2030, implementing actions to care for the environment:
● Eliminate unnecessary plastics and those that are not 100 percent reusable, recyclable or
compostable.
● Reduce the amount of materials to manufacture packaging and containers by more than 25 percent.
● Promote responsible consumption; that is, to promote the consumption of the products and
amounts to be used to avoid waste.
● Achieve by 2025, the collection of 70 percent of PET containers, and 30 percent on average for other plastics.
● Continue with the technological development and investigation of materials and technology.
● Incorporate food grade recycled resin in packaging of petsto continue reducing the use of virgin raw materials.
“Two decades ago, 8,000 tons of PET containers were recovered. Today more than 547 thousand tons, which means that in Mexico 60 percent of the PET containers sent to the market are recovered; of which, 64 percent return to being containers (Circular Economy)”, assured Romina Dávila, director of operations at ECOCE AC
“As the growth of the recycling industry spreads in Mexico, ECOCE and its Associates continue to contribute to its development, setting compelling objectives for the next 7 years, such as reducing unnecessary plastics in packaging, ensuring that 100 percent is can recycle, reuse or compost and that do not contain dangerous chemicals”, added Jaime Torres, communication director of the civil association.
Mexico It stands out for having the recycling industry of pets largest in the American Continent, since it has more than 30 recycling plants. This achievement is the result of a great work of more than 20 years by the food and beverage industry, which was inspired by the advances of European countries that have managed to transform their waste successfully and with high recycling rates.
“At ECOCE, we already manage 45 percent of the flexible packaging sent to the market by our associated companies”, said Romina Dávila.
“The first step is to carry out an adequate separation of waste from its origin. From all of us it depends that they do not reach the environment. For that, we must be aware that the Materials really have a value and are useful in the recycling industry, if they are used”, concluded Jaime Torres.
