- Despite recent increases, 60% of ENARM applicants do not get a place.
- To be able to enter the medical residency, it is not enough to pass the ENARM because you must also attend an interview at the desired hospital.
- Although the natural thing is to explain the reasons why you want to enter that hospital, sometimes many inappropriate questions are asked of those interested.
The path that a person must face to become a doctor is too long and full of adversities. Even after graduating from university it is possible to continue with professional training. The most common is to enter the medical residence although very few succeed. Despite the interest of young people, the problem is that there are few places available.
After college, what’s next for a doctor?
This process is mandatory for all general practitioners who want to become specialists. Although it should not be believed that it is the only option available. It is also possible study master’s degrees, doctorates or take any other course with curricular value.
Likewise, professional studies should not be limited to Mexico. Abroad there are also other alternatives for health professionals. In Spain there is the MIR and in United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE). Both are ideal for Young people who want to study a specialty.
Back in Mexico, the National Examination of Applicants for Medical Residencies (ENARM) is considered one of the most complex tests that health professionals can face. It consists of exploring the cognitive competences contextualized in clinical cases focused on Public Health, Emergencies and Family Medicine of the four core specialties: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics and General Surgery.
The exam includes questions structured in reagents with clinical case format, containing two to three questions for each clinical case; a single correct answer option in the modality of the best answer and three distractors.
To access the medical residency it is necessary to obtain a high score in the ENARM. Despite the increase in places, 60 percent of applicants are not accepted.
The last step to be able to be a resident
However, passing the ENARM does not guarantee getting a place because there is still one more step to go. It consists of choosing a hospital and going to an interview. Each hospital has its own rules, but everyone’s goal is to show that you are the perfect candidate to be accepted.
The natural thing during this stage is to mention the studies you have and why you are interested in that hospital. But it is not always like that because there are also some rare or strange questions that applicants are asked.
About this topic the user @drjefemaestro He created a list with the most out of place questions that have occurred to him. The conversation started with “What would you do if a secondee hits you and threatens you not to tell anyone?”
Can we make a thread of weird/silly questions that you were asked in the residency interview?

His idea was well received and he received a lot of comments with other weird questions that have happened to other residents. In the case of women, several agreed that emphasis was placed on them not to get pregnant during the specialty. While others were questioned if they knew gossip about the hospital.
For now, in your case, did they ask you strange questions in the interview to enter the medical residence?
