It was a known news that Quentin Tarantinodirector of Violent times, kill bill and once upon a time in hollywood, plans to retire with his tenth film. Now, the filmmaker gives us more details about this latest film that will be titled The Movie Critic.
Quentin Tarantino talks about The Movie Critic
In interview with DeadlineAmerican director confirmed that the film will be set in Los Angeles in the 1970s. However, it will not be inspired by the life of Pauline Kael, as had been rumored. Tarantino revealed that the plot was inspired by a memory from his youth, involving a film critic writing for an adult magazine.
“It is based on a subject who actually livedbut who was never really famous and I used to write movie reviews in a porn magazine”.
Quentin discovered the writer while working filling a vending machine with such magazines: “Everything else was too vulgar to read but there was this porno magazine that had a very interesting movie page.” And it was just the way in which the writer expressed himself that aroused Tarantino’s interest the most:
“He wrote about popular movies and was a second-rate critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was too cynical. Reviews of him were a mix between a young Howard Stern [conductor de radio] and what Travis Bickle [de Taxi Driver] I would have been as a film critic.”
Although there is still nothing concrete about the film, as it will barely enter pre-production in the following months, Tarantino has in mind the profile of his protagonist. He wants someone young, so he probably won’t go with one of his usual picks like Leonardo DiCaprio or Brad Pitt.
“I haven’t decided yet. [quién será su protagonista]but It will be someone who is around 35 years old. It will definitely be a new lead actor for me. [El crítico en el que se inspiró] he wrote as if he was 55 but he was in his early/mid 30s. He died in his late 30s. It wasn’t clear, but now that I’ve done more research I think it was complications from alcoholism.”
The time to retire
What is certain is that the controversial filmmaker will retire with her from the business of making movies. Quentin Tarantino insists that The Movie Critic It will be his last work and there is no way he will retract it. However, that is not to say that he will leave the entertainment industry entirely.
“I could do a TV show. I did not say that I would leave [por completo], OK? I could do a TV show. I could make a short film. I could do a play. There are all kinds of things I could do, but I’ll probably be more of a writer.
It is time. It’s time for me to retire. I like the idea of going big. I like the idea of giving it your all for 30 years and then saying ‘Okay, enough’. And I don’t like minor returns. And now is a good time because what is a movie these days, anyway? Is it something that shows up on Apple? Those would be minor returns.”
