There are eight stadiums of the World Cup in Qatar 2022, authentic jewels of modern architecture in the middle of the desert. But one stands out for its curious origin: the 974.
With a capacity for 44,089 spectators and located on the seafront in Doha, the great feature of the stadium 974 is that it is detachable and it is done with 974 containers from China with the material for its construction.
Its name comes from the nation’s telephone code.
Spanish firm Fenwick Iribarren Architects was in charge of its design, with construction taking just two years. As he explains Spanish sports newspaper As, the containers were joined with steel moldings, designating different colors to the areas.
For example, the blue ones gather the offices and the places of sale of food; the yellow ones, the bathrooms; the red ones, the corridors and the access areas to the enclosure. It even has prayer areas for women and men, in black and gray colors.
“The result is an unmistakable stadium, boldly colored and resolutely modern,” FIFA says on its website. “Its ingenious modular design meant that fewer normal building materials were needed than for traditional stadiums, which helped reduce costs.”
The sustainability of stadium 974 of the World Cup in Qatar 2022
In addition to the ingenious design, the 974 stadium of the Qatar 2022 World Cup stands out for its sustainability. It does not require air conditioning, since it is close to the seaand after being used it will be dismantled and used for other uses, with the end of the championship.
“Its design is, therefore, flexible, which allows it to be built again with the same capacity in another place or to choose to make several smaller fields, using the same materials,” says FIFA. “All of the stadium’s steel structure can be recycled and reused after the tournament, depending on which legacy option is chosen.”
Stadium 974 receives seven matches of the World Cup in Qatar 2022: those already played Mexico vs. Poland, Portugal vs. Ghana and France vs. Denmark, in addition to Brazil vs. Switzerland on November 28, Poland vs. Argentina on 30, Serbia vs. Switzerland on December 2 and a round of 16 match on 5 from December.
