PlayStation 3, 2 and 1 classics could soon be played on PlayStation 5.
While Xbox began to bet on the complete backward compatibility of all its generations of consoles for a long time, PlayStation has always been more reluctant to implement this type of system. PS5 is currently backwards compatible with PS4 games, but soon it could also be with PS3, PS2 and even PS1 games. At least that’s what a new patent registered by Mark Cerny, chief architect of the PlayStation 5 architecture.
As Shaun McIlroy has discovered, Marck Cerny would have registered a new patent at the beginning of the year through USPTO under the name “Backward Compatibility Through Use Of Spoof Clock And Fine Grain Frequency Control”, which implies that the designer has come up with how to make PlayStation 3, 2 or 1 games compatible with the current PlayStation 5. This will be the doors to which dozens of classic sagas, whether from Sony itself or third party publishers, can be played on modern consoles. Games like the collection of God of War, Killzone, Resistance, Jak & Daxter, Sly and a very long etc.
Which would really fill the blanks in here. Y’know?

At the moment no concrete plan has been confirmed on how to implement this new backward compatibility system, but everything seems to point towards Spartacus, PlayStation’s answer to Xbox Game Pass. According to the latest reports, it would be an evolution of the current PlayStation Plus service which would have three subscription levels, each with different bonuses. The first would be equivalent to the current PS +, the second would have a library of backward compatible PS4 games and the third, the most complete, would have PS Now streaming functionality plus a library of backward compatible PS3, PS2 and PS1 games.
Hence, the second patent filed by Mark Cerny in early January bears the name “High-Speed Save Data Storage for Cloud Gaming”. At the moment we can only wait for PlayStation to be encouraged to announce this service officially, according to the latest leaks, it would be preparing up to two State of Play for February and March.
