PS5 and PS4 receive a new system update which, despite being a PS5 launch promise, does not yet include the technology VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), but Sony assures that it is already being tested and will reach all players in the coming months. Meanwhile, this new version of the system changes a few things here and brings more accessibility options.
For example, this system update brings the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles, PS5 Game Base and Trophy card UI redesign, and mono audio as a novelty in accessibility. A voice control system (in English) and a new category of cards, “Pro Tips”in Control Center (via PlayStationBlog).
On the other hand, the PS App and PS Remote Play are updated on mobile devices with new features like creating or joining a Party, visual redesign to go along with PS5, dark mode and screen reader in new languages like Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Thai Greek and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
PS5 will have VRR coming soon
For the biggest novelty of the PS5 system to date, behind the possibility of increasing storage with an external SSD, we will still have to wait a few months. VRR technology “improves the visual performance of PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame rate issues and screen tearing“, reports PlayStation. Also improve input lag of controls in some cases.
Once implemented, games already released on PS5 will be able to enjoy this VRR technology “through a game patch”, but if this is not the case, the system gives the option of “force” VRR in games that don’t support it. This can cause “unexpected visual effects” but can be turned on and off at any time.
PlayStation promises more details about this VRR feature and which games will receive a compatibility patch, “as we get closer to the release of the feature,” though no specific date has been shared beyond “in the coming months”. We will have to keep waiting a little longer, despite the fact that it was a PS5 launch promise back in 2020. This news just arrives when new rumors have begun to arrive about a hypothetical PS5 Pro, hopefully this one comes with the VRR as standard .
