An obligation that all brands have is to be clear about the content of their products. When it comes to food, it is even more important because people’s health is at risk. For that there is Federal Consumer Protection Office (Profeco) and in its most recent report it warned about two milk brands they are not honest with what they offer.
Result of the national investigation on milk brands
In this case, the National Consumer Protection Laboratory carried out a quality study of 17 milk and three dairy products sold in the Mexican market. What was obtained was that the mark The 19 Brothers it does not really offer milk and also has less content than declared on its label.
According to the results of the analysis, published in issue 544 of the Consumer Magazine, corresponding to June, this product is actually a mixture of milk with vegetable fat. It also states that it contains 36 milliliters less than those that appear on its label.
On the other hand, it was also found that two Lala brand products do not comply with the standard due to the unregulated process of lactose elimination. Its density and non-fat solid content are not the minimum required by the NOM-155-SCFI-2012.
The reported products are the following
- LALA 100 FRESH lactose-free, DESLACTOSED. Semi-skimmed milk, lactose-free, ultrafiltered, pasteurized, added with vitamins A and D. Reduced fat (Mexico) 1 liter.
- LALA 100 FRESH lactose-free LOW CARB -30%, LIGHT. Semi-skimmed milk, lactose-free, ultrafiltered, pasteurized, added with vitamins A and D. Reduced fat (Mexico) 1 liter.
For its part, Profeco indicates that the rest of the brands of milk and dairy products offered in the market comply with sanitary quality. It also highlights that its casein content is in accordance with reference standards.
In each product, commercial information was verified, that the combined milk and dairy products comply with what is indicated in the corresponding official standards; that they comply with the declared net content and nutrients such as protein, fat, carbohydrates and caloric intake (kcal); in addition to the sanitary quality.
General indications of Profeco
Among other considerations, it is recommended identify if it is milk or dairy product, since there are important nutritional differences. It should also be checked that the product that is purchased is within the expiration date.
In addition, it also indicates that pasteurized products require refrigeration for their conservation, regardless of whether they have been opened or not.
It should be noted that products that do not comply with the Official Standards may be subject to precautionary measures, and their suppliers to requirements and, where appropriate, to procedures for violations of the Law.
