The sixth generation of the Opel Astra will arrive in dealerships in early spring 2022. In the coming weeks, the lightning brand will open the order books for a compact so new that it even changes the production site. From Gliwice to Russelsheim, the fifth generation will cease production in December with a record number of units manufactured.
The sixth generation of Opel Astra It has already been presented and in a few weeks the order books will be opened in the main European countries, including Spain. A completely new model that will even change your production site, moving from the Polish factory in Gliwice to the German factory in Russelsheim, the heart of the lightning mark.
The production of the new Astra will practically coincide with the cessation of production of the fifth generation that is scheduled for the beginning of next December. In six years on the market, no less than half a million have been manufactured of Astra units at this Gliwice plant. The unit with the number 500,000 is the one you can see in the image above, painted in blue and equipped with the 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine and manual transmission, which will soon be shipped to a customer in Germany.

Gliwice is one of the most profitable production factories of the Stellantis consortium since, since It was inaugurated on August 31, 1998 until today, just over 2,750,000 units have been manufactured of passenger cars. Now, with the departure of the German compact, the factory will continue its operation, although it will radically change the object of production. Instead of passenger cars, the Franco-Italian consortium has assigned it a new role.
On the one hand, and new generation facilities built in the same complex, will produce the Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Jumper, Fiat Ducato and Opel Movano in their different body variants and also including the right hand drive configuration starting from the beginning of April 2022. Stellantis is in the process of training and adapting its personnel with the aim that Gliwice reaches the 100,000 units manufactured annually since 2023.
In this way, Stellantis closes the circle and strengthens its facilities in Poland, adding the facilities, experience, knowledge and skills of Gliwice to the new PureTech gasoline engine factory located in Tychy and shared service centers in Gliwice and Tychy.
