Today, during the press conference “La Mañanera”, in the company of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), the governor of the Islas Marías shared the tourist offer of the destination, which apparently will open before the end of the year . Attendees will be able to visit the tourist complex managed by the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR), but with ferries operated by private initiative.
This is what the President said in his presentation during the conference:
“We are going to start visiting the Marias Islands. So that they can be visited, this legendary prison became a center for recreation, tourism, observation, the enjoyment of nature and also to recreate history”.
“In the Islas Marías, opponents of the regime were imprisoned, when they suffered from more authoritarianism. This prison was created when Porfirio Díaz and after the Revolution continued to be a fearsome prison. José Revueltas was imprisoned there and wrote that classic, extraordinary book, the walls of water […] and let’s go so that whoever wants to visit the islands, in this case Isla Madre, Isla María, can now do so. Arrangements were made, there is a museum, there are cells, a jail”.
Thus, the head of the Executive branch gave the floor to Jesús Salvador de Olaguibel Domínguez, Governor of the new tourist center Las Islas Marías.
