Formula E has lost Audi and BMW. Mercedes will also leave the category at the end of the 2021-22 season. The extensive presence of German brands will be reduced to Porsche, as the Stuttgart firm has committed to the ‘Gen 3’ era of the contest. Before this new episode, the ‘Season Eight’ is a tough challenge for the manufacturer. Despite entering Formula E at the same time as Mercedes EQ, its neighbors have achieved a drivers’ title and another for teams, while Porsche has barely been able to celebrate four podiums without victories.
The success of Mercedes EQ compels Porsche to raise the bar and fight for the Formula E title this season, something he hasn’t done in his first two seasons in the series. To this end, the Stuttgart house has decided to bet on the continuity of its project and will feature an updated Porsche 99X Electric and the same driver line-up as last season. This means that Andre Lotterer will compete with the #36 Porsche, while Pascal Wehrlein He will do it with the single-seater with the number #99.
Despite maintaining the foundations of the project, Porsche has been reinforced with Florian Modlinger. The German assumes the direction of the brand’s project in Formula E after going through different projects in FIA GT1, World Rallycross and DTM: «The team has made great progress during the past season. Now they face the third as a highly motivated group. The objectives are very clear, consistently achieve good results and win races. We want to add wins and the Formula E title to Porsche’s illustrious racing history.».
Andre Lotterer agrees with his new boss: «We want to win races and fight for the title at the end of the season to be World champions. After a season of changing fortunes, now we want to be constantly among the best and regularly score points. That is what is needed if we want to stay in the fight for the title. I am looking forward to working with the team, getting back behind the wheel and having fun».
For its part, Pascal Wehrlein He added: «We have consolidated a lot as a team. Although we could have done better, we learned a lot and have undoubtedly become stronger. This season we want to work from there. As a team, I’m looking forward to the fight and winning races. The regulation change is sure to have a positive effect and will ensure that the competition is even fairer and more interesting. We have to be completely focused from this first race and give the best of ourselves. Only then will we be quick and successful.”
