“In that sense, and aligned with the international trend, we are moving to more efficient processes. In 10 years, our Mexican branch expects to be completely carbon neutral. In addition, this 2021 we inaugurated the first cigarette butt recycling plant in all of Latin America, ”said Andrzej Dabrowski, CEO of Philip Morris Mexico.
As a sign of its progress towards more sustainable production, in 2020, the company achieved a 23% reduction in its water consumption (compared to 2019). Likewise, 100% of the water they use is treated and 43.3% represents water reused in irrigation and auxiliary systems of the process.
As far as energy is concerned, in 2020 they achieved a 30% reduction in their total consumption, compared to the previous year, in addition to a 62% decrease in the use and purchase of fossil fuels. On the contrary, that same year they showed an increase of 16% in the consumption of energy from renewable sources.
Similarly, during 2020, there was a 21% reduction in total waste generation compared to the previous year and a 56% decrease in carbon dioxide emissions was recorded.
