In 2022, A24 surprised us with the launch of a slasher written and directed by American filmmaker Ti West (The house of the devil) titled X. The tape with shades of terror, suspense, mystery, gore and with a great reminiscence to classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, was very well received by the public and critics, thanks to its refreshing formula within the subgenre. Just a few months later, the origin story of the villain of X is told in a prequel that bears the title Pearl: An X-traordinary origin story.
What is it about Pearl?
Pearl is the origin story of the villain of Xthat old woman who unleashes terror among Maxine (Mia Goth) and her friends, who had proposed to make an adult film in a rural area of Texas, at the end of the 70s.
In Pearl We will travel from the 70s to the golden age of Hollywood at the beginning of the 20th century (1918, to be exact) to delve into the origin of the protagonist’s most sinister obsessions:
“Trapped on her family’s isolated farm, Pearl must care for her ailing father under the watchful eye of her bitter and overbearing devoted mother. Desiring the glamorous life she has seen in the movies, all of her ambitions, temptations and repressions explode, resulting in the stunning Technicolor-inspired origin story of the iconic villain of X”, reveals the official synopsis.
Pearl was secretly and simultaneously filmed together with X. It is worth remembering that X premiered in our country on May 25, 2022 (HERE you can see our video review).
Distribution
The cast of Pearl features the return of the actress mia gothwho in X gave life to Maxine and the old Pearl, but obviously with prosthetics. She is joined by David Corenswet (hollywood), Tandi Wright (love and monsters), Matthew Sunderland (Z: The Lost City), Alistair Sewell (the power of the dog) and Emma Jenkins-Purro.
The direction and the script are carried out, again, by Ti West. Although this time Mia Goth joins as a screenwriter for the film.

With X Y Pearl on the thread, still missing a link. Is about MaXXXine, the film that closes the Ti West trilogy. In accordance with Deadline, MaXXXine brings back Maxine (Goth), after the events of Xwho continues her journey to fame and sets out to make it as an actress in Los Angeles in 1985.
“I’m trying to build a world out of all this, like people do today. Can’t make a movie slasher without a lot of sequels,” said the filmmaker (via indiewire).
When it premieres Pearl in theaters in Mexico?
Pearl: An X-Extraordinary Origin Story will arrive February 16, 2023 to the cinemas of the Mexican Republic.
The film had its world premiere during the 79th edition of the Venice Film Festival.
