Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) came to an end with the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in theaters and the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas special on Disney+. Curiously, although it was the phase that opened the door to the series on the streaming platform, only two will have second seasons.
Of the eight premiered shows, a list that includes critical hits like WandaVision, just Loki and the animated What If…? were renewed, each for their respective reasons.
As a report published on the website of screen rantthe series of the god of mischiefs played a huge role in introducing the MCU’s next great villain, Kang the Conqueror., while What If…? it’s capable of telling stories that are separate from the main timeline, making it a more than pleasurable product for Marvel Studios.
The returns of the “cancelled”
The house of ideas has not ruled out sequels for the other series, but in most of the cases their plans go through spin-off of characters involved. Is it a flop for Marvel? Not really. Quite simply, the MCU roadmap lays out different paths for the superheroes that appeared in the different shows.
ms marvel will return in The Marvels (2023), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will have as continuity Captain America: New World Order (2024), Agatha Harkness from WandaVision will have its own show Agatha: Coven of Chaos (2023) and the character of Vision will return as White Vision in Vision QuestDeveloping.
In the case of hawkeyewill also have a spin-off instead of a sequel with Maya Lopez returning in Echo (2023), the future of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop unknown, although both should return in Phase 5.
Finally, it is almost certain that moonknight returns after a post-credits scene will show Marc Spector’s third alter ego, Jake Lockley. As for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, it is most likely that it will not be renewed since Marvel Studios’ plans are for Jennifer Walter to go to the MCU tapes.
When do the second seasons of Loki and What If… premiere?
Loki season 2 will launch in 2023 and will be an opportunity for the MCU to further explore the threat of Kang and the multiverse, having already laid down the rules with the Temporal Variation Authority (TVA).
