The Pokémon Company is known for its collaborations with other brands, as Pikachu and dozens of other Pokemon they have appeared on different products over the years. However, the Pokémon plush business is one of the most popular.
The official website of the Pokémon Center has hundreds of Pokémon plushies of all sizes. But The Pokémon Company isn’t going to let that stop it from joining another trend. A new collaboration has been announced between Pokemon and the incredibly popular line of stuffed animals Squishmallows by Jazwares.
The association between Pokemon Y Squishmallows was officially announced by Jazwares brand director, Aaron Margolin, at the Squishmallows booth at the comic-con from San Diego. A photo of the booth revealed two display stands with new Pokémon Squishmallows under display cases.
The first Pokémon to receive a Squishmallow is, of course, Pikachu. The second Pokemon, and a big surprise, is the creepy ghost-type Pokémon Gengar. The Squishmallows are a line of egg-shaped plush toys that are presented as “super soft” and that are perfect for cuddling.
The Pikachu plush toy will remind Pokémon fans of the first games, when it was especially chubby and cuddly. Pikachu’s ears and tail continue to stand out, as fans have come to expect. Gengar may be surprising, but it’s a great choice due to its already round shape. Its ears and spiky fur also help give the stuffed animal character.
Margolin describes it as “Wave 1” of the collaboration between Pokémon and Squishmallows. It may be somewhat disappointing that the collaboration starts with just two plushies, given the near certainty of their popularity, but making it clear that this is only the beginning of the partnership should allay some concerns.
