NVIDIA today unveiled the new GeForce RTX 4090 and 4080 graphics cards. In addition to promising a massive leap in performance, they’re also the first to feature the new Ada Lovelace architecture, and it boasts several major improvements. Between them, DLSS 3 technology, the next generation of NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling that promises to change how games move on your computer.
If you already knew how DLSS works, you will know that it is a really useful tool. With her, you can significantly improve the graphic aspect of your game. Thanks to artificial intelligence, DLSS is able to reconstruct the scene at a higher resolution. Thus, it allows other resources to be allocated to performance (FPS), while maintaining an equally amazing graphic aspect.
Unlike its previous generations, NVIDIA has insured that DLSS 3 will be able to improve gaming performance up to 4 times. In this way, for example, you can play at 4K resolution from 1080p.
NVIDIA shows us the performance it is capable of achieving with DLSS 3, compared to previous generations
In a video uploaded to the official NVIDIA YouTube channel, the company shows us how DLSS 3 works in Cyberpunk 2077. We have a split screen example, where the left section shows the performance we would get if we had DLSS disabled, and the right shows the potential of DLSS 2 and DLSS 3.
With DLSS disabled, the performance offered by Cyberpunk 2077 It was less than 30 FPS. With DLSS 2 and Ray Tracing turned on, meanwhile, I could hit just over 60 FPS. both results they are quite a distance from the amazing 98 FPS that the game reached when DLSS 3 was activated within your graphics options and of course with Ray Tracing turned on.
Do you want to play with DLSS 3 on your computer? You will need an RTX 4000 graphics card. The company has confirmed that it will be exclusive to the new graphics cards, and hopefully those that arrive in the future will also be able to take advantage of it.
It should be noted that other companies are also launching alternatives to DLSS. AMD is one of them, with FidelityFX Super Resolution, a very similar feature and that can also be compatible with other graphics cards not produced by AMD itself.
Other DLSS 3 improvements
In addition to improving the performance of graphics cards, NVIDIA has confirmed that DLSS 3 also positively affects processors. So, it can improve their performance by 100%, and integrates NVIDIA Reflex technology to reduce latency and increase response in titles, something quite important in competitive games.
Thanks to the function of Optical Multi Frame Generation, DLSS 3 can generate new frames per second. According to NVIDIA, the new generation of pixels can be multiplied by 7 or 8, improving the performance of games.
Optical Flow Accelerator is another feature of DLSS 3. With it you can track elements in scenes instead of just pixels, which allows the technology to have a better understanding of the graphic elements on screen as shadows, resulting in fewer interruptions when rendering.
NVIDIA has also announced Shader Execution Reordering (SER), a technology that allows you to rearrange shader loads dynamically. In this way they become more efficient, obtaining up to double the improvement and a 25% increase in the frames per second of the games.
What titles will be able to take advantage of this new NVIDIA technology?
NVIDIA has already confirmed a number of games and graphics engines that will receive DLSS 3 support. The list will continue to grow over time, so it’s not the definitive one:
