Of this book, it is the first properly German adaptation that manages to materialize, more than 90 years after Hollywood conceived its own film version of the original material (All Quiet on the Western Front1930).
“Told from the perspective of Paul Bäumer, a 17-year-old German soldier, the film begins three years into the First World War; back then, the most brutal and bloody conflict in the history of mankind,” reads an official synopsis of No news at the front. Paul and his friends leave school buoyed by propaganda and dreams of glory and join the army, confident of victory. But the reality of trench warfare is more like a nightmare, as they are beset by rain, mud, and surrounded by terrifying and constant death.”
The adapted script was the responsibility of its director Edward Berger, in complicity with Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson.

about the manager
Edward Berger is a filmmaker originally from Germany who received an Emmy nomination in 2018 for his work on the miniseries patrick melrose from the Showtime network. For the same brand, she also led three episodes of Your Honorthe drama show starring Bryan Cranston.
Via No news at the front, the director wanted to emphasize an honest perspective around the devastating war conflict of the beginning of the 20th century; one of two wars on a global scale where the legacy of his nation continues to generate remorse.
“Our vision of war is dominated by pain and shame, by devastation and guilt,” Berger said (via Netflix). “There is nothing positive left, not the slightest spark of heroism. Making our history, our background and our attitude towards the war the engine of a film seemed like a great challenge to me. And I thought that this very specific German perspective might also interest people from other countries. Especially right now.”
