Against the ‘Los Tres Leones’ squad, on May 30, 2014, Bengoechea put Raúl Fernández as goalkeeper; Alberto Rodríguez, Christian Ramos and Alexander Callens, from central offices; and Luis Advíncula and Yoshimar Yotún, full-backs. In the middle, he lined up Josepmir Ballón, Rinaldo Cruzado and Luis Ramírez. And as attackers he used André Carrillo and Jean Deza. The substitutes were Paolo Hurtado, Raúl Ruidíaz, Hansell Riojas, Mario Velarde, Pedro Gallese, George Forsyth, Miguel Trauco, Gianmarco Gambetta and Edison Flores.
What about them?
Raul Fernandez. The last calls that ‘Superman’ Fernández had to the national team was when Bengoechea was in charge of the team. The Argentine Ricardo Gareca never called him. Today the goalkeeper is 37 years old and has been playing for the Atlético Grau club since last season, where he is the starter.
Alberto Rodriguez. The central defender was part of the team that qualified for Russia 2018. He played two of the three matches that the bicolor played in that World Cup. After that World Cup he was not called up by the ‘Tiger’ again. His last team, at the club level, was Alianza Atlético Sullana from Liga 1, where he played in 2021. Today he has 39 calendars.
Christian Ramos. The 34-year-old defender played for clubs such as Juan Aurich, Gimnasia (Argentina), Emelec (Ecuador), Tiburones Rojo (Mexico), Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia), Melgar, Universitario and Alianza Lima. He currently defends the colors of Sport Boys, a club that is fighting not to be relegated. He played in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and was called up between 2020 and 2022 for the dates of the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers, although Gareca did not call him for the playoff against Australia.
Alexander Callens. After spending time at Real Sociedad B and Numancia de Soria, in Spain, he arrived at New York City FC in the MLS, where he won the national title in 2021. Without a doubt, he did well when he was in North America. At the moment, he plays for Girona in the Spanish league. At the national team level, he is an important player, as he was key in the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers. He is being taken into account by coach Juan Reynoso.
Luis Advincula. He is a fundamental player in the rojiblanca. He was in the process towards Russia 2018 and also in Qatar 2022. His career in clubs has been developed abroad. He has passed through the Ponte Preta in Brazil, Vitória Setúbal in Portugal and Rayo Vallecano in Spain, to name a few examples. Today he is at Boca Juniors in Argentina, where he has won four trophies, including the First Division tournament in 2022. He is having a good time at ‘Xeneize’, so Reynoso will continue to summon him. .
Yoshimar Yotun. He is another of the important players for the national team, essential for Russia 2018 and for the qualifying process for Qatar 2022. Currently, he plays for Sporting Cristal, where he seeks to recover his good level to continue being key in the rojiblanca. He has gone through teams like Orlando City of the MLS or Cruz Azul of Mexico. Juan Reynoso is following him. He recently lined it up in friendlies against Germany and Morocco.
Josepmir Ballon. He stopped being called up in March 2016, so he did not play Russia 2018 or much of the qualifying process for that World Cup. In 2019, he returned for the Copa América and for some friendlies, but after these matches, Gareca did not call him again, until Peru faced Jamaica in 2022, where Ballón played the entire match. That was his last game wearing the bicolor. Currently, he is the captain of Alianza Lima and is going for the three-time championship in the Peruvian league.
Rinaldo Cruzado. After the match against England, the national midfielder played 5 more matches with the rojiblanca. The last one in his career was against Chile in October 2014. Since then, he has not worn the national jacket again. He has gone through Peruvian clubs such as César Vallejo, Alianza Lima and Alianza Atlético. Today, at the age of 38, he is at San Martín playing in League 2.
Luis Ramirez. He stopped being called to the bicolor in 2014. He played his last match in a friendly against Paraguay in November of that year. That time Peru won 2-1. With 28 calendars, ‘Cachito’ Ramírez currently protects the Cantolao jersey, the club he joined this season.
Andre Carrillo. He is one of the most successful Peruvian soccer players today. He was key in the Gareca era, playing in the World Cup and the qualifying process for Qatar 2022, and aims to be one of Juan Reynoso’s most important attackers. Today he is playing for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, where he has won the Saudi Professional League three times and the AFC Champions League twice.
Jean Deza. His media scandals harmed his sports career. In fact, the last time he defended his national colors was in April 2015. Since then, Gareca has not summoned him again. And the ‘Cabezón’ Reynoso has done less. Currently, the 29-year-old winger is without a team. His last club was Cienciano, where he was until mid-May of this year. The “Mouse” was a promise of Peruvian soccer that could never take off.

And the substitutes?
Of those who were substitutes against the English, Pedro Gallese became the team’s starting goalkeeper to this day and stands out for Orlando City in the MLS. Raúl Ruidíaz also stands out in the North American league, only with the Seattle Sounders, and hopes to be key in the Reynoso era. In the same way, Miguel Trauco and Edison Flores seek to be important in this new process of the ‘Chess Player’, just as they were during Gareca’s stay.
For their part, Paolo Hurtado, Hansell Riojas, Mario Velarde and Gianmarco Gambetta have not been called up again, but continue to play at club level. Hurtado and Riojas, militants in Cienciano; Velarde, in Carlos Stein of League 2; and Gambetta in the Cajamarca UTC. The only retired from this group is the former goalkeeper George Forsyth.
