The New Zealand government said Monday it would launch an inquiry into the country’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic so that future governments can learn from the experience.

A Royal Commission, the highest level public inquiry in New Zealand, would look into the overall response, the government said in a statement. That would include considering economic measures, such as fiscal and monetary policy responses, but without reviewing individual central bank decisions.

The goal would be to identify lessons that could be applied in a future pandemic.

“It has been over 100 years since we experienced a pandemic of this scale, so it is critical that we take stock of what worked and what we can learn from it should it happen again,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a statement. release.

New Zealand’s rapid response to the pandemic and its geographic isolation kept the country largely free of COVID-19 until the end of 2021, earning Ardern strong domestic support.

But anger over vaccine mandates for people working in sectors like health and education and strict border closures sparked protests earlier this year. Some opposition political parties are also now blaming the government’s financial response for contributing to three-decade high inflation.

The review will conclude by mid-2024, the government said.
