“As part of the process of selling Citibanamex’s business and consumer banking, we need to verify your data. Remember that if they are not updated within 24 hours, your account will be cancelled,” the email reads.
The bank has reported on social networks that it never asks to verify data by any means. “We remind you that if they ask you for your passwords or PINs, it is not us,” says the bank.
Criminals are taking advantage of Citigroup’s announcement this week to sell the retail business that includes: branches, ATMs, the consumer credit portfolio, SMEs, Afores, savings accounts and the cultural heritage to generate fear among bank customers.
How to avoid fraud?
These are some of the recommendations to avoid fraud:
one. If you get a call saying it’s bank staff, hang up and call the bank yourself.
two. If in an email or message they ask you to enter a link, type the bank’s page yourself so as not to fall into an apocryphal page.
3. Use your banking app: you can turn your cards on and off, block operations and generate single-use digital cards.
Four. Wherever possible, use contactless payments. Some cards already offer this possibility and you will not have to enter your security code.
5. When you pay with a card in a physical place, never allow them to take your plastic and you must always be the one who enters the PIN.
