During 2021 rumors arose about a possible increase in Netflix prices in the United States. Today, unfortunately for the consumer of that country, the platform made it official. Netflix raised the price of all its plans, a measure that will surely not be viewed favorably by its North American subscribers. Updated subscriptions are as follows:
- Basic plan: $10 (before $9).
- Standard plan: $15.50 (was $14).
- 4K plans: $20 (was $18).
Netflix says prices will go into effect starting today for new subscribers, as collected TheVerge. However, those who are already service members will see the increase gradually. The latter will receive an email 30 days before to inform them of the price change.
While the increase isn’t significant, what’s really worrying Netflix subscribers is that these changes now apply between shorter periods of time. The previous time that Netflix raised its prices in the United States was in October 2020. That is, just 16 months passed. Before that, they did it during January 2019.
Will Netflix go up in price in other countries?
At least in Spain, Netflix already made a move last October. At that time, the company justified the increase in the need to continue producing original content. The problem, however, is that recently Netflix has prioritized quantity over quality. This is probably due to the fact that its rivals have a broader portfolio of franchises and must respond with the same amount.
“Our main objective is to offer entertainment that exceeds the expectations of our subscribers. We are updating our prices to be able to reflect the improvements of our catalog of series and movies, as well as the quality of our service and, what is more important: to be able to continue to offer more options and improve our value proposition,” they mentioned in October.
In the case of the United States, Netflix’s justification has not been very different: “We are updating our prices to be able to continue to offer a wide variety of quality entertainment options. As always, we offer a variety of plans so members can choose the price that fits their budget.”
