The roses They are one of the most widespread plants in gardens, patios, terraces and balconies thanks to their variety of colors and their aroma. Because… Who hasn’t held a rose in their hands on some occasion, to enjoy its intense aroma?
There are red, yellow, white, pink… and now they are in full bloom, since the rosebushes begin to throw their flowers from the beginning of spring, extending their season until the end of summer. In milder climate areas, we can see roses even at the beginning of autumn.
But sometimes, our precious rosebushes are attacked by a dangerous enemy: the aphid. These insects feed on the sap of the plant, colonizing the stem, the leaves, and even the flowers, weakening the roses to the point of killing them in the most serious cases. They especially attack the youngest and greenest shoots.
The good thing about this pest is that its presence can be detected with the naked eye: if we see large numbers of black or yellow/green insects, your rose bushes have aphids. Also, if the affected parts are sticky, the signal is clear (the honeydew released by the aphid causes that sticky effect). In the hottest climates, it usually disappears when temperatures exceed 35º (it usually takes refuge in the roots, from which it continues to feed).
To combat aphids with ecological solutions, it is best to treat the plant with Neem oil (14.99 euros), an oil that contains its own natural insecticide and that remains on the leaf, driving away all the insects that want to feed on its sap. To clean the molasses leaves, it is best to use potassium soap (22.95 euros).

Also, you should know that there are species like ladybugs that feed on aphids, so its presence is very beneficial to control aphids. And that’s important to know because if you don’t use chemicals, predatory pest insects like aphids can help you control these pesky visitors.
