The agreement signed by the CEO of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, and the president of MotorLand Aragón, Arturo Aliaga, ensures the presence of the Alcañiz circuit in the World Cup of MotoGP three times until 2026. The first of these editions will be the one already scheduled for this season, which will take place between September 16 and 18. Thus, the future of the next great prizes in the Iberian Peninsula is drawn in a more concrete way.
Starting next season, MotorLand could alternate with other circuits on the peninsula, but in any case maintaining a minimum of two grand prix between 2023 and 2026. Carmelo EzpeletaCEO of Dorna Sports, took advantage of the announcement of the agreement to thank Aragón for its presence in the difficult past seasons: «We are delighted to be in Aragon. In the two very difficult years that we have gone through, the presence of Aragón and his help to make the two Grand Prix of 2020 and the Grand Prix of 2021, It has been very important to be able to move forward».
For its part, Arturo Aliagapresident of MotorLand Aragón, highlighted the importance of the agreement for the region: «The Government of Aragón is committed to the Alcañiz circuit, which enjoys a great international prestige and extensive experience in organizing this type of event. Holding these Grand Prix has a significant impact, it represents a enormous boost both in the territory and in economic activity and projects the image of Aragon throughout the world».
The agreement reached by MotorLand Aragón is identical to the one signed at the time by the Ricardo Tormo and Montmeló circuits. Both tracks are guaranteed two appointments on the MotoGP calendar between the 2023 and 2026 seasons. Something similar happens with the Jerez circuit. The Andalusian route has confirmed the same number of events, although in its case it does its presence has been fixed for the 2023 and 2025 seasons. Therefore, all the Spanish tracks that have been part of the Motorcycle World Championship in recent years have their future assured in it.
More and more countries and tracks demand to have a presence in MotoGP, which forces us to reduce the weight of Spain in the World Championship. For this reason, a rotation system for the circuits of the Iberian Peninsula which could be implemented from next year. Just check if the plan is finally carried out and how the calendars are configured from then on. In principle, some of the circuits mentioned, with the exception of Jerez, would have to stay out in 2023.
