Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Could Bring Back Scorpion

Horiyuki Sanada is very optimistic about the return of Scorpion for Mortal Kombat 2.

Mortal Kombat was the first title in the Warner Bros. film franchise based on Midway Games’ fighting video games.with Simon McQuoid as director – known for other projects for Call of Duty and Halo 3.

Given the box office success, with a collection of more than 84 million dollars, compared to its budget of 55, (clarifying that it spent the first days in the first place on digital platforms), a sequel also directed by McQuoid was recently confirmed.

This movie focuses on the origins of Cole Young, a character that was created specifically for the adaptation -or else, it does not appear in the video game- while finding valuable information that links him as heir to the ninja Hanzo Hasashi, better known as Scorpion-(a legendary samurai killed by Bi-Han in the 17th century). However, Hanzo is resurrected at the end of the first Mortal Kombat thanks to his descendant, Cole Young an MMA fighter, and manages to defeat Bi-Han.

Simultaneously, the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-zero is present through the action gore as it appears in the video games it was inspired by. So Cole’s destiny points to defending Earthrealm from the sorcerer Shang Tsung and the forces of Outworld with every possible resource.

Scorpion is one of the most important characters for Mortal Kombat

Although Cole was the ideal character to discover all the secrets that the video game showed, there is no doubt that his heritage is one of the most important things for the narrative. Of course, Scorpion is the most popular character as playable in Mortal Kombat. This undead Ninja specter was seeking revenge for his death at the hands of Sub-Zero, which made him the main anti-hero of the games.

Thanks to his adaptation in the first film being quite well received, recently actor Horiyuki Sanada has commented in interviews on the possibility that he will return to play Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 2. Sanada starred in the 2021 feature film that was based on NetherRealm’s fighting video games.

In addition to Sanada, the cast of the first Mortal Kombat installment included Lewis Tan as Cole, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung.

The directed reboot received mixed reviews, who agreed that the action sequences were very well crafted, while the weak points of the title were concentrated in the performances and some parts of the script.

Getting back on topic, while speaking to ComicBook.com about his role in the upcoming action thriller Bullet Train, Hiroyuki Sanada spoke in regards to the development of Mortal Kombat 2. At one point, he was asked what would happen to Scoprion, the actor. He explained that he wasn’t sure of his return, but he thought it was quite possible: “I have no idea, I haven’t heard anything officially yet. But, I hope they do a part of Scorpion, and I’ll be able to say ‘Come here!’ again”.

Secondly, Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim recently confirmed that he had signed a five-movie spin-off deal., so it’s surprising that Sanada wasn’t aware of his character’s status in Mortal Kombat 2. And while audiences and critics differed regarding the adaptations of various characters from the story and, especially, the lack of the actual title tournament, it is true that Scorpion and Sub-Zero were widely accepted by video game fans; especially for the bloody fights that occurred at the beginning and end of the film. So, Since Taslim is already prepared for the filming of Mortal Kombat 2, everything seems to indicate that Scorpion will be there, played by Sanada.

Finally, the fact that Simon McQouid is confirmed for the sequel is also an indication that he wants to work with the same cast, even if this means a minor role in the film. In addition, it is likely that Jeremy Slater, from Moon Knight, will be in charge of writing the script for Mortal Kombat 2, also Greg Russo -the previous co-writer- stated that the 2021 film was intended to become a trilogy, so in this second film of the series, one of the most important characters for the video game could not be missing. And, in addition to this, perhaps this would be the perfect opportunity for Scorpion to help Cole and other Earthrealm fighters defeat Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung.
