ISD and CASM analysts collected data on 7 million followers from an initial list of 132 Twitter accounts known to have spread abusive and misogynistic content.

  • The study argues that Elon Musk’s management has created a permissive environment.

  • Misogynistic Twitter accounts have skyrocketed by 69 percent since the arrival of Elon Musk.

Elon Musk He has given a lot to talk about since his arrival as Twitter CEO, since he has been criticized in large part for his attitude and ideas when it comes to managing the platform. And recently a study showed that specifically the misogynistic accounts have skyrocketed by 69 percent after the arrival of the millionaire, which speaks volumes about the influence he has had on the platform.

Musk is a South African businessman, naturalized American, who has excelled in the world of technology mainly due to its participation in well-known companies such as Tesla, SpaceX and PayPal.

It is well known that Elon Musk is constantly active, innovating and managing several projects of technology because he is even involved with his mission SpaceX which stands out for its space transportation services. Something that characterizes the millionaire is his ambition to want to lead his projects, because it is because of this that he has managed to be the richest man in the world, since he is in charge of the most influential companies. It is estimated that his fortune is around 190.8 billion dollars. Recently, Musk’s plans to create his own artificial intelligence laboratory were discussed (AI) to compete against the ChatGPT of Open AI, despite the fact that at the time he was a co-founder of said company, his objective now is to compete against it. Likewise, he has given a lot to talk about in Mexico due to his plan to install a Tesla factory in Monterrey Nuevo León.

Misogynistic accounts have skyrocketed since the arrival of Elon Musk, according to a study

According to a study made by ISD Globalthe misogynistic accounts of Twitter have been shot in a 69 percent since the arrival of Elon Musk to the platform, because in recent months, a large number of new users have been created who began to follow well-known accounts that spread abusive content against women.

To carry out this study, the institute used the data of 7 million followers of 132 misogynistic profiles as a sample. Four major spikes in the creation of new followers were identified, all of which were related to key events. The first two peaks occurred on April 6 and October 28, coinciding with the announcement of Musk what would i buy Twitter, as well as the termination of the agreement.

Other spikes occurred on November 19 and December 30, the days on which Andrew Tate’s Twitter account was restored and the date of his arrest. Said user is in charge of promoting highly misogynistic content, and his arrest is due to suspicions of human trafficking.

Due to this, Twitter suspended Andrew Tate’s account in 2017, but under the mandate of Elon Musk, said account was reactivated. Profiles similar to yours registered between 22,000 and 29,000 new followers per day during the aforementioned peaks, with newly created accounts.

This research shows that Elon Musk it has created a network that is permissive enough for the growth of these abusive hate accounts.

This study even reached Musk, who did not take it in the best way since he answered in the form of sarcasm.

“Sorry for turning Twitter from a nutritious haven to a place that has…trolls,” he tweeted.

The increase in misogynistic accounts on social networks can have serious consequences for women and for society in general. First, it can lead to an increase in online violence and sexual harassment, which can have a negative impact on women’s mental and emotional health. Second, it can make it difficult for women to participate online and limit their ability to express themselves freely.
