The 2022 WTCR season has picked up a cruising pace and the contest has arrived in Spain this weekend to compete in MotorLand, home event for Mikel Azcona. The Navarrese driver has acted as the perfect host and has once again shone with his own light after adding a new victory at the controls of the Hyundai Elantra N TCR. Azcona maintains his extraordinary performance, since he has added victory in three of the six races. A 50% efficiency that, if maintained over time, will hardly be synonymous with a title.
Be that as it may, Azcona prefers to go appointment by appointment, race by race. A philosophy that works perfectly for him and at MotorLand Aragón it has become clear. before his audience, Mikel took victory in the reverse grid race, in addition to getting a valuable fourth place in the main race. Although it is true that Rob Huff has achieved more points than Azcona in Aragón by getting two second places, Mikel is the moral winner of the weekend due to the advantage he has acquired at the top of the standings of the WTCR.
In fact, Mikel Azcona has reached 129 points, thirty units more than Gilles Magnus has. The Belgian driver was the other great protagonist of the weekend – with Huff’s permission – by achieving victory in the main race with the Audi RS 3 LMS TCR. Six points behind the Comtoyou Racing driver appears Santiago Urrutia. The Uruguayan rider continues to be the best Lynk &Co rider, although tied on points with Rob Huff -CUPRA- and with one point more than Yann Ehrlacher, current series champion. With 82 is Nestor Girolami.
Although Azcona’s advantage over his closest rival is 30 points, behind the Spaniard it is maximum. This is evident from the position of Magnus, Urrutia, Huff, Ehrlacher and Girolami, but also with the performance of Nathanaël Berthon. The Comtoyou driver achieved his second podium of the season at MotorLand and that has earned him to place seventh overall with 81 points. Behind the French, yes, there is a greater jump since Ma Qing Hua and Esteban Guerrieri add 68 and 66 points respectively.
Rob Huff continues to dominate the WTCR Trophy with an iron fist, category intended for private pilots without support from a manufacturer. The Briton has 83 points and is 51 points ahead of Mehdi Bennani. Things are much tighter in the team classification. The BRC Hyundai N team has taken the lead with 165 points thanks to the performance of Mikel Azcona and Norbert Michelisz. Ten points behind the structure linked to Hyundai appears the Cyan Racing team. Third, with 150 points, is Honda’s Münnich Motorsport team.
