In exchange for being focused and having new icons, the taskbar of the new Windows 11 It is a version in the bones compared to its predecessor. For reasons that no one understands and Microsoft doesn’t explain, this critical part of the desktop has had a lot of useful features removed.
However, it is quite possible that one of those functions – one of the most important for many users – will return with an update. As they have verified in WindowsLatest, in Build 22458 of Windows 11, it is possible to drag and drop file folders in an app that is docked to the toolbar.
Windows 11 bar is the least flexible in years
In Windows 11, unlike previous versions of the system, it is not possible to choose on which edge of the screen to pin the taskbar, is permanently anchored to the bottom. The old right-click context menu is gone and replaced by a simple option to go to Settings.
You cannot ungroup windows of the same app in the icons of the bar in the classic style, and also not possible to drag icons from the desktop to pin them to the bar, nor is it possible to drag files to open directly from a pinned app.
If Microsoft returns functions to the taskbar, we will have to wait another year for them
It is these last two options that Microsoft is already testing again on the latest Builds for Insider Program members on the Dev channel, which indicates that they are very likely to return.
That is the good news, the bad news is that these options are 100% out of the first version of Windows 11 that will arrive on October 5, because we are talking about Builds for the next version of Windows 11, the October 2022 update. That is to say, at least we will have to wait a year to have a working task bar.
Windows 11 has a lot of good things to it, and for some it’s probably a one-way trip. However, let us remember that is a completely optional upgrade. Windows 10 will continue to be supported until 2025, and if the current state of Windows 11 doesn’t convince you, you may very well skip the version for a few years.
