If you are still using old versions of microsoftofficethe company is about to discover you in the middle of a quiet review of the computers of Windows users who don’t yet have the revamped Microsoft 365.
According to a report published on the website of Extreme TechAccording to recent patch notes, the Redmond company is rolling out an update that will analyze what version of Office is installed on your PC.
The goal is to send the information to the headquarters, just to know the number of users who are still using Office 2007, 2010 and 2013. The first two versions have not been supported for years and 2013 will meet the same fate in April 2023.
The update appears as a January 17 patch on the Microsoft support site.
What does Microsoft say about the patch?
The description of the update explains: “This update is intended to help Microsoft identify the number of users running unsupported (or soon to be unsupported) versions of Office, including Office 2013, Office 2010, and Office 2007. This update will run once silently without installing anything on the user’s device”.
Obviously, Microsoft indicates that the update is safe, since it has been scanned for viruses and stored on a secure server. You will also not need to restart your computer after installing it.
For some people, older versions of Office are still more than enough to type text into a document or spreadsheet. But Microsoft wants its customers to use the latest version of its software, for profit and security reasons, because once products go out of support, they’re forever vulnerable.
